Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) shall give full play to its research strengths and continue to lead the studies of water environment protection, freshwater fishery, and microalgal biotechnology in China, BAI Chunli, president of the CAS, said during his visit to the institute on July 17.

When he was in the institute, Bai visited the Donghu Experimental Station of Lake Ecosystems where he learned about the progress made in the restoration technology of lake ecosystem by the station and some of their successful cases for application.

Researchers of the station showed the president the online monitoring platform of multi-environmental factors in urban lakes, via which the real-time and historical data of meteorological, physicochemical and planktonic factors that indicate the succession of Donghu lake ecosystem are monitored and collected.

Bai also listened to the report, delivered by IHB’s acting director YIN Zhan, on the construction of the Hydrobiological Data Analysis Center (HDAC).

"IHB is the first institution that conducted investigation on aquatic resources in China. We have a trove of data collected during the aquatic investigation conducted in the river, lakes and various water areas since the 1950s, ” said Yin.

Most of the data scattered among different research groups in the institute, there is thus a need to establish a center that is devoted to the gathering, management and analysis of all the data, according to the acting director.

"The missions of the HDAC will be oriented to the aquatic biodiversity conservation, prewarning of algal bloom, and assessment and restoration of water environment in the water-related projects,” Yin explained the positioning of the center to the president.

Bai said that the HDAC would be a promising platform that he was looking forward to seeing the results and benefits it generated in the conservation of ecology and aquatic biodiversity.

Bai’s entourage included ZHANG Tao, vice president of the CAS; HU Lishan, deputy Communist Party chief of Wuhan; SHU Ruisen, vice secretary-general of Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC; and general directors from the bureaus under the CAS.
