IHB Holds Postcard Design Contest for Yangtze Finless Porpoise

IHB joined hands with China Post in launching a postcard design contest for the Yangtze finless porpoise.

This year’s International Freshwater Dolphin Day is October 24, which is also the Yangtze Finless Porpoise Conservation Day. On the occasion of these two events, the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences joined hands with China Post in launching a postcard design contest for the Yangtze finless porpoise.

The contest aims to enhance the public awareness about the protection of the Yangtze River, and thus help the Yangtze finless porpoise return to Wuhan city. It will run through November 20.

The protection of the Yangtze River needs the efforts of generations. In order to raise the youngsters’ awareness about the protection of the Yangtze finless porpoise, on October 24, the organizing committee arranged a drawing activity where children picked up their paintbrushes and painted the smiling Yangtze finless porpoise and the beautiful Yangtze River on the postcards, and mailed the cards to more people.

On the same day, the Yangtze Culture Post Office, the first themed post office run by Wuhan Municipal Postal Administration, opened the "Yangtze finless porpoise public art space" to the public. The story of the Yangtze River and the Yangtze finless porpoises were rendered through various art forms in this post office.

This year’s Yangtze Finless Porpoise Conservation Day was more special as the 10-year fishing ban officially kicked off on the first day of the year. Besides, the Yangtze finless porpoise was upgraded to the national first level protected wild animals on February 5, and the Yangtze River Protection Law came into force on March 1.
