The third Finless Porpoise Care Month was launched on May 22, 2023.

The third Finless Porpoise Care Month and the exhibition of achievements in "Digital Yangtze Finless Porpoise" were launched on May 22, 2023.   

This event coincided with the International Day for Biological Diversity, May 22nd. The theme was "Empowering with Digital Technology, Nation-wide Care for Finless Porpoises". The guiding units for the event were the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Hubei Province, the Forestry Bureau of Hubei Province, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Wuhan City, the Ecological Environment Bureau of Wuhan City, the Wuhan Academy of Social Sciences, and the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Over 200 participants attended the event.    

In her speech, LIANG Qiong, deputy director of IHB, expressed that the institute will continue to excel in scientific research and innovation for the protection of Yangtze finless porpoises.    

MEI Zhigang, Associate Professor of IHB, reported on the progress of China's first-ever translocation and release of Yangtze finless porpoises, which took place on April 25th in the newly constructed Luohe section of the Yangtze River in Tian-e-Zhou, Shishou, Hubei Province. He stated that the two Yangtze finless porpoises released into the wild have a high probability of integrating into the natural population. The release of Yangtze finless porpoises into the Yangtze River holds strategic significance in driving the empowerment of digital technology for their protection.   

The event also announced the results of the selection of "Yangtze Smiling Angel Ambassadors”.    

The Finless Porpoise Care Month was jointly initiated by IHB and the Wuhan Baiji Conservation Foundation in June 2021. It has now become a well-known brand for the protection of Yangtze finless porpoises and the dissemination of Yangtze River ecology and culture.
