Commencement Ceremony Marks Start of Academic Journey for 2023 Graduates

On September 7th, 2023, the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences celebrated the commencement of the 2023 graduates with a grand opening ceremony.    

YIN Zhan, director of IHB, highlighted the essential attributes for success during the graduate phase. Emphasizing the importance of effective communication, critical thinking, time management, self-cultivation, and resilience in the face of setbacks, he urged the new students to seize the moment. He also encouraged them to focus on scientific pursuits, stay abreast of cutting-edge issues, and draw inspiration from their esteemed mentors, hoping they would swiftly assume their roles. He expressed heartfelt expectations for the new graduate students to make the most of the favorable learning environment and opportunities, fostering a legacy of outstanding achievements and cherished memories.   

XIE Shouqi, deputy director of IHB, delivered a presentation titled "Knowing the History, Inheriting Fine Traditions, Understanding the Situation, and Promoting Innovative Spirit." Providing insights into the institute's founding principles and mission, Xie recounted the institution's illustrious 90-year history, and conveyed the spirit of scientific inquiry, innovation, patriotism, dedication, and resilience.    

In her presentation, LIANG Qiong, deputy director of IHB, defined research integrity and behavior, analyzed institutional regulations, and shared governance case studies, Liang underscored the importance of ethical scholarship. Through the exhibition of meticulously revised manuscripts by senior scientists, she conveyed the institute's commitment to rigorous academic standards. Liang left the students with an inspiring message: "pursue honest scholarship and be upright individuals."   

In the afternoon, the Office of Assets and Facilities Management organized a safety education session for the new students. Guided by firefighting instructors, the new students actively participated in hands-on fire extinguisher training.  

The day concluded with a visit by the graduate students to the institute's education base – the Scientist Achievement Exhibition Hall. Through the exploration of old photographs and artifacts, the students gained profound insights into the institute's rich history, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the spirit of scientists who have shaped its legacy.
