On September 12, 2024, the Yangtze River Dolphin Research Base in Honghu, Hubei Province, hosted an adoption ceremony for a Yangtze finless porpoise. The event marked a significant collaboration between the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Wuhan Baiji Conservation Foundation (WBCF), and Lenovo Group.
Lenovo has officially adopted the finless porpoise, known as "No. 1575," for one year within the Xinluo Baiji National Nature Reserve. During the ceremony, WANG Runzhang, a senior official, praised Lenovo’s proactive approach to supporting the "Great Protection of the Yangtze River." He emphasized the critical role of social engagement in species conservation and expressed hope that Lenovo's philanthropic efforts would motivate other companies to contribute to ecological preservation.
WANG Ding, representing the WBCF, noted that Lenovo is the first corporation to adopt a finless porpoise with a plan for rewilding. This initiative aims to promote the recovery of wild populations and bolster conservation efforts along the Yangtze River.
MEI Zhigang, deputy secretary-general of the WBCF, highlighted the anticipated benefits of the adoption. He stated that it would enhance resources for frontline protection, leverage corporate influence to raise public awareness, and integrate technological innovations into conservation work.
LIU Wei from Lenovo reiterated the company’s commitment to biodiversity protection through technological innovation, a focus they have pursued since 2021.
During the ceremony, Lenovo received a certificate of adoption for the Yangtze finless porpoise. Additionally, a digital image and merchandise based on "No. 1575" were launched, and a public naming activity was initiated.
The female porpoise, measuring 138 cm in length and weighing 36.4 kg, is estimated to be 4-5 years old and is nearing physiological maturity. Currently, she is undergoing rewilding training at the Laowan Branch of the Xinluo Baiji National Nature Reserve, with plans for her eventual release back into the Yangtze River.
