Finless Porpoise Care Month Recognized Among Hubei's Top 10 Science Popularization Activities

On December 24, 2024, the Hubei Association for Science and Technology announced its list of the "Top 10 Science Popularization Activities in Hubei," with the " Finless Porpoise Care Month," initiated by the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, among the honorees.

Each June marks the peak of reproductive activity for the Yangtze finless porpoise in the wild and is a critical time for the care of mother and calf porpoises. In June 2021, the Institute of Hydrobiology, together with the Wuhan Baiji Conservation Foundation, launched the first " Finless Porpoise Care Month—Helping the Yangtze Porpoise Return to Wuhan" campaign. Now in its fourth year, the event has become a well-known initiative for the protection of the Yangtze finless porpoise and the promotion of ecological culture along the Yangtze River.

The fourth edition of " Finless Porpoise Care Month " launched in Wuhan on June 1, 2024, under the theme "Smile City, Protecting the Future of Whales and Porpoises." For the first time, the event incorporated science outreach on coastal whale and dolphin species, such as the Chinese white dolphin and the Bryde's whale, enriching the content and showcasing China's comprehensive efforts in freshwater and marine ecological protection. From the early research and conservation of the Baiji to the ongoing focus on the Yangtze finless porpoise, and now to the protection of coastal species like the Chinese white dolphin and Bryde’s whale, the Institute of Hydrobiology has remained at the forefront of whale and dolphin conservation in China.
