On March 8th, fishery biologist Academician Wenxuan CAO made a presentation entitled “the Influence of Hydropower Project on Aquatic Ecology and Fish Resources Conservation” on the 8th floor of the experimental building at IHB. About 200 experts and students attended this lecture.
IHB Prof. Wenxuan CAO has been involved in the research of fishery biology for nearly 50 years and has hosted a variety of researches on the influence of hydropower projects on fishery resources. In the presentation, he introduced the distribution status of endemic fishes in the Yangtze River region, explained the influence of hydropower projects on aquatic ecology, analyzed the accumulative effects of cascade hydropower development on aquatic ecology in the upper reaches of Yangtze River and proposed the strategy of overall evaluation on the ecological environment of cascade development of rivers and countermeasures and suggestions on systems of establishing endemic fish natural reserves and formulating regulations on ecological compensation fee.
During Prof.Wenxuan CAO’s tenure as member of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and deputy to the National People’s Congress, he proposed his proposals such as “establishing endemic fishes natural reserves in the upper reaches of Chishui River”, "the South-to-North Water Diversion Project should be launched as quickly as possible, the ecological environment in Hanjiang River should be established simultaneously”, during the fourth session of the Tenth National People’s Congress in 2006, Science Daily once published the article “Wenxuan CAO: Speak for the fishes”, reporting the various efforts Academician Wenxuan CAO made for the living space of fishes in the Yangtze River.
