The Symposium on the Project "Integrative Demonstration of Ecological Treatment for Schistosomiasis" Successfully Held and Field Survey Launched

Prof. Pin NIE collected snail samples.

Following the suggestion of the CAS President Yongxiang LU, the important directive project of the CAS Knowledge Innovation Program “Integrative Demonstration of Ecological Treatment for Schistosomiasis” launched by the Bureau of Life Science and Biotechnology (CAS) by the end of last year has achieved new progress.

A symposium on the Project jointly organized by the Division of Integrative Biology of the Bureau of Life Science and Biotechnology (CAS), Scientific and Cooperative Division of Wuhan Branch, Chinese Academy of Scineces and the project team was held on March 11th in Wuhan. Experts from the Research Groups of Fish Immunology and Parasitology, Research Group of Taxonomy and Ecology of Protozoa, Research Group of Fishery Ecology, Research Group of Chemical Ecology etc. participated in this symposium with experts from Institute of Zoology (CAS) and Wuhan Institute of Virology (CAS).

The symposium centered on three issues, i.e. infection source control for schistosomiasis, elimination of snail habitats and comprehensive demonstration, and pointed out the research work that will be carried out later. On March 23rd, Prof. Pin NIE, principal investigator of this project led a team to Shishou City of Hubei Province, a serious endemic region of schistosomiasis, to conduct a survey on the distribution of snails. The team also collected some snail samples and visited the local residents of the City.

An administrative staff of Shishou City made an introduction to the distributive environment of snails and the endemic facts of schistosomiasis.
