"CAS Ⅲ" Promoted as New Species

  

 

Reproduction of fish fingerlings 

  

The promotional program of IHB’s allogynogenetic gibel carp “CAS Ⅲ", sponsored by National Industrial Technology Research System of Major Freshwater Aquaculture Fish, a project of the Modern Agro-industry Technology Research System was held in Hubei Huangshi Fu’er Aquatic Seed Co. Ltd., April 19th. Director Guoliang ZHANG from the Division of Science and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture, together with 50 scientists from the National Industrial Technology Research System of Major Freshwater Aquaculture Fish and heads of the experimental station attended this program.  

The promotional program was hosted by Prof. Guiwei ZOU from the Laboratory of Breeding and Reproduction of the National Industrial Technology Research System of Major Freshwater Aquaculture Fish and Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences. Director Guoliang ZHANG and Mr. Zuguo Xin, vice mayor of Huangshi city made a speech respectively at the seminar.  

Director Zhang said that as one of the modern agricultural industrial system which was launched in the second phase, the goal of the National Industrial Technology Research System of Major Freshwater Aquaculture Fish is to solve the technical problems of improving the quality of major freshwater aquaculture, updating the cultural pattern, elevating the aquaculture efficiency, and prolonging the industrial chains etc. Prof. Xianping GE, chief scientist of the National Industrial Technology Research System of Major Freshwater Aquaculture Fish and Vice Director of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences Freshwater Fisheries Research Center introduces that the allogynogenetic gibel carp “CAS Ⅲ”, the third generation new species, was bred by Prof. Jianfang GUI and his research team in the State Key Laboratory of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology of Institute of Hydrobiology, CAS after more than 10 years’ unremitting research.  

This new variety was identified and approved at the fifth session of the third National Certification Committee for Aquatic Varieties and was ranked as an aquatic variety that is suitable for aquaculture in China. Based on the dual reproduction modes of gynogenesis and sexuality revealed in the species, the researchers performed numerous mating experiments between two different clones, and found a few of preponderant individuals from the sexual mating progeny between clone D and clone A.  

Then, the preponderant individuals were propagated by six successive generations of gynogenesis with Xingguo red common carp (Cyprinus carpio) sperm stimulation, and several hundred millions of individuals were produced in hatcheries and used for aquaculture practice. The successive three year data from growth comparisons and productive aquacultures between the allogynogenetic gibel carp “CAS Ⅲ”and the already popularized high dorsal gibel carp indicate that the new variety grows faster than the old variety by a range of 13.7% to 34.4%, and the meat yield of the former is also higher by over 6%.  

The body of the fish is silver black and the fish scales are close in array which make the scales not easy to be removed. It is known that myxoboliosis could result in the death of liver cyst which parasitizes in the liver of fishes, yet this new species could lower the incidence of this disease.  

At present, the new variety of allogynogenetic gibel carp “CAS Ⅲ" has been popularized and bases for the reproduction of improved variety and production of fish fingerlings have been established in Jiangsu province, Hubei province, Guangdong province and Guangxi province etc. Huangshi Fu’er Aquatic Seed Co. Ltd is one of the three production bases established for “CAS Ⅲ" in Hubei province. In addition, “CAS Ⅲ" has been popularized in Huanggang city, Huangshi city, Honghu city, Wuxue city, Huangmei city, Xinzhou city and Xiangfan city etc. This new variety is vey popular with the local fish farmers and produces great social and economical benefits.  

The allogynogenetic gibel carp “CAS Ⅲ" can be cultured in a variety of controllable water body in the whole country. It is estimated that hundred millions of fish fingerlings will be cultured in fishponds in Hubei province, Jiangsu province, Guangdong province, Guangxi province and Xinjiang province, with an aquaculture area of over 10,000 mu (1mu = 0.165 acre).
