General Introduction:

The Research Group of Aquatic Virology has been devoted to the study of aquatic animal viruses that cause epidemic diseases and the aquatic microbial viruses that drive the earth's biogeochemical cycles at the nanometer scale. It also studies the molecular biology of these viruses.

Over the past 24 years since the establishment of this group, the group members, led by Prof. ZHANG Qiya, have been working together on the isolation of aquatic virus and elucidated their genome architectures and key gene functions. They also investigated virus replication cycles, molecular genetics and evolution, molecular mechanisms of virus-host and virus-aquatic environment; developed aquatic virus detection and prevention technology; sought for ways of utilizing aquatic virus resources.

Based on the established research technical system of aquatic virology, this group has isolated different viral pathogens from diseased aquatic animals including amphibian, fish, and crustacea, and from harmful algae; resolved whole genome of 13 aquatic viruses from six families; illustrated the organization characters and biological functions of a batch of key genes from aquatic virus; and revealed the molecular mechanism of ranavirus pathogenesis and cross-species infection.

Their related achievements won two Natural Science Prizes of Hubei Province. Eight invention patents were authorized. The bilingual monograph Atlas of Aquatic Viruses and Viral Diseases, together with the graduate textbook Aquatic Virology and a large number of research papers, were published and widely cited by experts at home and abroad.

It is a capable and highly effective team, providing the source of strength for the growth of young talents. More than 40 graduate students have been trained, many of whom won awards like the Excellent President Award of the CAS, Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of Hubei Province, and National Scholarship for Graduate Students. More than 60% of the graduate students have obtained the title of associate professor or above, or have management responsibilities at the same time. They play important role in the corresponding fields at home and abroad.

In the future, this group will continue to focus on the aquatic virus and its molecular biology research, especially on the mechanisms of entry and genome replication and transcription of aquatic viruses; investigate how aquatic viruses invade and infect in different host; interpret the mechanism of aquatic virus infection and cross-species transmission; and look for technologies of resistance to virus disease or utilization and modification of virus as biological resources.

Major Areas of Research:

1. Isolation and identification of emerging viral pathogens, characterization of aquatic virus genome structure and gene function.

2. Elucidation of aquatic virus life cycle, pathogenesis and aquatic virus-host interaction, and the interaction of viruses and their hosts in aquatic environment.

3. Development of the strategies for preventing, diagnosing and controlling viral diseases in aquaculture, and exploration of aquatic virus resources.
