Norwegian, Brazilian Fish Nutritionists Visit IHB

Karl D. Shear, Professor of Aquaculture Protein Center in Norway, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on May 28.

Débora M. Fracalossi, Professor of Federal University of Santa Catarina Centre for Agrarian Sciences Aquaculture Department in Brazil, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on May 28.

On May 28, Karl D. Shear, Professor of Aquaculture Protein Center in Norway, together with Débora M. Fracalossi, Professor of Federal University of Santa Catarina Centre for Agrarian Sciences Aquaculture Department in Brazil, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences..Both professors respectively made presentations entitled "Aquaculture sustainability and human interference with global nutrient cycles” and “Aquaculture in Santa Catarina state, Southern Brazil”.

Based on the data gathered from global nutrient cycles and human activities, Prof. Shear suggested better use of integrated system for the sustainable development of global aquaculture, i.e., to make available the cheap aquatic products (e.g: fishmeal) for the domestic animal consumption and utilize their waste products for aquatic production so that there will be complete utilization of materials. Prof. Shear also introduced the development status of aquaculture in Santa Catarina, Brazil, whose aquaculture pattern resembles that in China. China and Brazil can learn from each other and communicate in the fields with mutual interest.

Prof. Shear also made a presentation entitled “Some common design and analysis problems observed in the aquaculture literature” for the researchers at the Research Group of Fish Physiological Ecology in the institute. In the presentation, he analyzed the problems existing in the experimental designs and data processing in nutrition sciences.
