Director General of Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific Visits IHB
Prof Sena De Silva, director general of Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific and an Honorary Professor of School of Life & Environmental Sciences at Deakin University in Australia, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) during Oct. 13 and 15, aiming to negotiate the issues concerning with the convening of the “International Symposium on Reservoirs and Lake Fisheries in the Asia-Pacific Region” with IHB in June 2011.

Prof. De Silva made a presentation entitled "Aquaculture development in Asia-Pacific: current status and future prospects” at the institute on Oct 15. He briefly introduced the aquaculture development in Asia-Pacific region from the aspects of fishery output, future demand for edible fish, the relationship between aquaculture and water environment, world’s top 10 aquaculture species, and fishery development, adding that China’s aquaculture ranks the first in the world both in size and output. Prof. De Silva said the development of aquaculture faces challenges such as market pressure, climate changes etc. He particularly emphasized the application of new technologies to the development of aquaculture in Asia-Pacific region.
Prof. De Silva has over 35 years experience in many areas related to aquaculture development and inland fisheries management and has acted as the principal investigator and coordinated aquaculture related projects in many Asian countries and coordinated the delivery of the first ever post-graduate course in aquaculture in the “distance mode” at Deakin University. He also serves on the editorial board of many journals and is the Editor in Chief of the newly launched journal, Reviews in Aquaculture.
