Associate Professor of Pennsylvania University Medical School Visits IHB

Dr. Jay Zhu, Associate Professor of Microbiology from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, paid a visit to IHB, Dec. 17.

On December 17, Dr. Jay Zhu, Associate Professor of Microbiology from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Adjunct Professor of Clemson University, Nanjing Agricultural University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB). As an international renowned research scientist of Pathogenic microorganisms, Dr. Zhu gave a lecture entitled "Vibrio cholerae Genetic Retooling at the Intestinal Interface" to researchers and students of the Institute.

With vivid verbal introduction and graphic symbols of Vibrio cholerae, Dr. Zhu introduced its harmful effects to mankind and expanded his research with a humorous story. He focused on Vibrio cholerae pathogenesis as well as pathogen and host interactions. A number of innovative ideas and methods were mentioned, such as modelling an intestine anaerobic environment of mice to study the mechanisms of gene regulation in vivo and how to filter the essential factors which play important roles after infection and how these factors are coordinate. IHB researchers and students had an in-depth interaction with Dr. Zhu on issues of mutual interest at the end of the lecture.

In 1991, Dr. Zhu majored in microbiology and obtained his bachelor's degree at Wuhan University; in 1999, he obtained his doctorate at Cornell University; during 1999-2004, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University and Cornell University respectively. Dr. Zhu has long been engaged in the studies of pathogenic microorganism. He has made remarkable achievements in Vibrio cholerae pathogenesis and the relationship between pathogen and host research. He has published more than 50 papers in international renowned publications such as PNAS, Journal of Bacteriology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Infection and Immunity etc. In addition, he is the editorial board member of Journal of Bacteriology, Frontiers in Microbiology, International Journal of Molecular Sciences and so on; he is also the magazine reviewer of Nature, PNAS, PLoS Pathogens, the Republic Molecular Microbiology, Journal of Bacteriology, and Infection and Immunity, Gene and Development, PloS ONE, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Gene, Microbiology, Trends in Microbiology, FEBS Letters, Achieves of Microbiology, FEMS Microbiology Letters etc. Dr. Zhu is the overseas evaluation experts of China National Natural Science Foundation, as well as United States National Natural Science Fund, and has full reputation in pathogenic microorganism.
