IHB Researcher Attends 1st Indonesian Marine Mammal Stranding Workshop

The 1st Indonesian Marine Mammal Stranding Workshop was held in Bali, Indonesia during Nov. 25 and 28, 2013. Dr. Hao Yujiang, Associate Professor of Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) was invited to attend this workshop which was jointly organized by the Indonesian Biodiversity Research Centre, Ocean Park Hong Kong, the Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association and Whale Stranding Indonesia, and sponsored by Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, Hong Kong (OPCFHK), WWF Indonesia and the International Whaling Commission. The event was also supported by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Indonesia and the University of St. Andrews.  

Attendees from Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, Singapore and China respectively introduced the conservation status of species and their stranding activities. By illustrating cases of marine mammal stranding activities in the Southeast Asia region, the attendees discussed on topic including first response, rescue and treatment, cause of stranding, anatomy, rehabilitation, public concerns and veterinary procedures.  

Dr. Hao introduced the stranding and bycatch of Yangtze porpoises and the establishment of the network on rescue of the stranded marine mammals in China. This workshop serves as a platform to share knowledge and experience in marine mammal stranding activities from the Southeast Asia region and impart knowledge about the various aspects of marine mammal stranding, including anatomy, biology, causes of stranding, first response, rehabilitation, decision-making, public concerns, veterinary procedures and others. 

 

Dr. Hoffman from the National University of Singapore introduced the impact of marine noise on the hearing of porpoises. 

 

 

Dr. Nimal Fernando from Hong Kong Ocean Park performs autopsies on finless porpoises.
