American and Italian Protozoologists Visit IHB

Prof. Eduardo Orias gave an oral presentation at IHB, April 17, 2014.

Prof. Eduardo Orias, together with Dr. Eileen P Hamilton (University of California, Santa Barbara) and Prof. Cristina Miceli (University of Camerino) paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) for scientific communication and international cooperation on T. thermophila genome research in April. This is the second time that they have come to visit IHB. They paid their first visit to IHB 9 years ago.

On April 17th, Prof. Orias and Prof. Miceli gave oral presentations to researchers and students at the institute with the title of “Chromosome Unscrambling: Somatic restoring genes & chromosome split by a germline translocation” and “Transcriptome of Euplotes focardii: hints of cold adaptation and other distinctive features”.

In their presentation, Prof. Orias reported the observation of DNA translocation event during T. thermophila sexual reproduction and the latest results about the molecular mechanisms investigation about this event. Prof. Miceli introduced the transcriptome analysis of an Antarctic protist, Euplotes focardi, and the functional characterization of lipase, microtubule proteins in E. focardi. After the presentation, they had extensive discussions with the attendees.

During their stay, they visited protozoa functional genomics research group. Together with the researchers and students in this research group, they reviewed the important scientific achievements through the intensive cooperation with this research group over the past years, and discussed the future cooperation research plan with the principle investigator and researchers in this group. In addition, Prof. Orias and Dr. Hamilton prepared a series of lectures about T. thermophila genetics, genomics, evolutionary biology and morphology for the students in protozoa functional genomics research group.
