Dr. Min Sung Park from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on May 7, 2015. During his visit, Dr. Park was invited to give a lecture with the title of “Project Green-Eagle: A new Bio-Jet Fuel Initiative in Korea”.
Dr. Park began his lecture with an introduction to the background, research objectives and research fields of Advanced Biomass R&D Center in Korea. He also listed the challenges and opportunities that microalgae industry is facing with. Later he put emphasis on work which had been done by his group and the latest progress achieved in microalgal energy. Their team has improved lipid productivity of overexpression strain by genetic solutions and has reduced both economical and energy costs in harvesting by flocculation and centrifuge.
The group led by Dr. Park found a way to gain biomass by using sludge as nutrient for microalgae. This solution can produce the same amount of biomass by medium. It can also efficiently remove nitrogen and phosphorus from waste water. At the end of the lecture, Dr. Park analyzed market demand of bio-jet fuels and the research situation in Korea. He presented that the new bio-jet fuels had more advantages over the original one. Later, the audience had in-depth discussion with Dr. Park on the prospects and challenges of bio-fuel industry and some key problems in harvesting had been started among audiences and Dr. Park.
