IHB Edits Book Fishery Resources, Environment, and Conservation in the Mississippi and Yangtze (Changjiang) River Basins Published by AFS

The book with the title of “Fishery Resources, Environment, and Conservation in the Mississippi and Yangtze (Changjiang) River Basin”, edited by Professor CHEN Yushun and his colleagues from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB), was recently published by American Fishery Society (AFS) with sponsors of the Nature Conservancy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, United States Geological Survey and University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The book was also featured on the AFS website.

The cover images of this book are the Mississippi River Basin in the United States and the Yangtze River Basin in China. This book is about 165,000 words, divided into three parts and a total of 15 chapters. IHB Professors LI Zhongjie, WANG Ding, CHEN Yifeng, LIU Huanzhang, LIU Jiashou, WANG Hongzhu and CHEN Yushun and their respective research groups led to edit seven chapters in this book.

The first part of this book is an overview of the two basins, including fishery resources, geology, land use, hydrology and environment of the Mississippi and Yangtze River basins. The second part is about endangered and invasive species, biodiversity, and conservation, including status of endangered sturgeon and porpoise resources in these two river basins, control and management of invasive carps like silver carp and bighead carp, and conservation of fish biodiversity. The third part is anthropogenic stressors, floodplains and river restorations, mainly covers the status of ecosystems in floodplains of the two river basins, the impact of human activities on river basins and river restorations.

The Mississippi and Yangtze (Changjiang) River Basins, which are the largest river basins in North America and Asia, serve as the principal navigational waterways and main water sources and play important economic, social, cultural, and ecological roles in the two continents, respectively. This is the first book published by American Fishery Society that focuses on the conservation of aquatic resources and ecological environment in the two basins. The publication of this book will further promote international exchanges and research collaborations in aquatic resources conservation and ecological and environmental protection between IHB, other domestic institutions and those in the Mississippi River Basin and North America.
