Prof. David Montagnes Visits IHB Three Gorges Reservoir Ecosystem Field Station

Prof. David Montagnes from School of Life Science at the University of Liverpool visited the Three Gorges Reservoir Ecosystem Field Station under IHB from March 22 to March 24, 2018.

Prof. David Montagnes from School of Life Science at the University of Liverpool, UK, together with Prof. ZHOU Yang from School of Life Science at Nanjing Normal University, paid a visit to the Three Gorges Reservoir Ecosystem Field Station under Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) from March 22 to March 24, 2018.

Prof. Montagnes gave a presentation with the title of “Can protists control cyanobacterial blooms?” for IHB scientists and postgraduates. In this presentation, Prof. Montagnes’s group verified their thermal sensitivity hypothesis and proved that the increasing temperature could improve the consumer’s ability to control the autotrophic prey. All the experimental data and the actual observation data were used to develop the “Ochromonas-Microcystis” predator-prey relation model. Towards the end of the presentation, Prof. Montagnes had an in-depth exchange with the audience. Prof. Zhou made a supplement and comments to help the theory to be understood easily.

After the presentation, Prof. Montagnes visited the laboratory, the enclosure system and biological floating island of the Three Gorges Reservoir Ecosystem Field Station. He discussed some scientific problems and possible cooperation that could be carried out between his group and Prof. BI Yonghong’s group in the future. Both sides reached agreement on joint research projects and graduate education in 2018.
