IHB Signs Scientific Cooperation Agreement with Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research

Represented by Prof. XIE Shouqi, deputy director of IHB, and Prof. Barak Herut, director of IOLR, IHB and IOLR signed a scientific cooperation agreement  on June 25, 2018 at IOLR Kinneret Limnological Laboratory.

In order to establish an appropriate form of exchange program in the basic and applied limnology, Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences signed a scientific cooperation agreement with Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research (IOLR) on June 25, 2018 at IOLR Kinneret Limnological Laboratory (KLL).

The agreement mainly focuses on the exchange visits of members of research staff, circulation of publications and information on the specific fields of study and research, student exchange, and exchange visits of members of technical or administrative staff.

Lake Kinneret, also known as the Sea of Galilee, is the only large shallow lake and the major water source in Israel. Since its establishment in the 1960s, the Kinneret Limnological Laboratory (KLL) has conducted long-term ecological monitoring and systematic research of the Kinneret, and has become one of the famous academic institutions in limnology.

IHB’s cooperation with IOLR can be traced back to the 1990s. Then several young scientists visited and worked there as visiting scholars. In 2015, the Sino-Israel bilateral cooperation project “Formation of cyanobacteria Microcystis blooms in shallow and deep lakes: implementation of novel methodologies to study spatiotemporal organization of toxic populations”, supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Israel Science Foundation (ISF), was approved. Coordinated by Professor SONG Lirong from IHB and Professor Ilia Ostrovsky from IOLR respectively, this project has been enhancing the collaboration between the two institutes and producing a set of understandings on the cyanobacterial bloom dynamics and methodology of monitoring, etc. A young scientist and a Ph.D. candidate were sponsored by the project and are currently studying at IOLR.

On June 26, 2018, a joint seminar- Lake Management and Fishery was held at IOLR, Haifa. 12 speakers, coming from IHB and Israeli side, gave oral speeches on different aspects of lake management and fishery. Six IHB researchers - Prof. XIE Shouqi, Prof. HU Zhengyu, Prof ZHOU Yiyong, Prof. SONG Lirong, Prof. LIU Jiashou and Dr. WU Xingqiang – respectively presented the following talks: "Effects of oral administration of blue-green algae on different fishes", "Characteristics of water bloom in Three Gorges Reservoir in last decade, "Stoichiometry of nitrogen and phosphorus and its role in regulating algal succession in Chinese shallow eutrophic lakes", "National action to combat cyanobacterial bloom and its harmful consequences: progresses and perspectives, "Status and modern trends of Chinese Aquaculture" and "Regime shift practice of a plateau eutrophic shallow lake.
