Prof. Martin J. Kainz from WasserCluster Lunz visits IHB

Prof. Martin J. Kainz from WasserCluster Lunz, Austria paid a visit to IHB on August 27, 2018.

Prof. Martin J. Kainz from WasserCluster Lunz, Austria paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on August 27, 2018. During his visit, he gave a lecture with the title of “Energy Transfer in Aquatic Food Webs-Sources, Methods, and Ecological Implications”.

In his presentation, Prof. Martin introduced how contaminants and dietary nutrients are taken up, modified, and/or retained in aquatic food web. In order to compare the fatty acid requirements for fish tissues and the efficient FA from dietary nutrients, he used stable isotopes to examine the composition and content of fatty acids in fish organs. In addition, Prof. Martin pointed out whether dietary nutrients can be used effectively in the growth of fish tissues and organs and said that more in-depth comprehensive researches were necessary.

IHB scientists and students listened to the presentation carefully and communicated with Prof. Martin on the related issues.

Martin J. Kainz leads the ‘Aquatic Lipid and Ecotoxicology Research Group (LIPTOX)’ at the Inter-university Center for Aquatic Ecosystem Research, WasserCluster – Biologische Station Lunz. So far, he has published more than 70 papers in top-tier journals such as PNAS, Environmental Science & Technology, Functional Ecology, Freshwater Biology, Limnology and Oceanography. He also serves as an editor for the journal ‘Advances in Oceanography and Limnology’ and ‘Inland Waters’, and is currently vice-president of the International Society for Limnology (SIL).
