Professor Sovan Lek from University of Toulouse III (France), who is the distinguished foreign expert of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), visited Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of CAS from November 24 to December 8, 2018. During his visit, he gave a two-day lecture on machine learning.
The course mainly relied on R language to explain the ordination, classification, prediction and other machine learning methods in data analysis and mining. It revolved around artificial neural network, stochastic forest, support vector machine and other application examples to carry out demonstration.
Professor Sovan Lek has long been committed to the researches on aquatic ecology and ecological informatics. He has a high international reputation in the fields of machine learning and ecological model. The method of "using artificial neural network to build ecological model" has established the important position of machine learning in the field of ecological research. Professor Sovan Lek organized a number of research projects on freshwater ecosystems, biodiversity and climate change in the European Union. More than 150 papers have been published in top journals such as nature, Ecology letters, Journal Applied Ecology, Global changes Biology Conservation Biology.
