Prof. Hew Choy Leong from National University of Singapore Visits IHB

Prof. Hew Choy Leong from National University of Singapore visited IHB on March 13th, 2019.

Prof. Hew Choy Leong from National University of Singapore visited Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on March 13th, 2019. During his visit, he made a presentation with the title of “Transgenic Salmon-Serendipity, Entrepreneurship and Perseverance ” for IHB researchers and students.

In his presentation, Prof. Hew introduced the story behind the construction and industrialization of transgenic Atlantic salmon. He was inspired by accidental death of salmon caused by low temperature, and constructed transgenic Atlantic salmon with rapid growth characteristics.

In order to bring this transgenic Atlantic salmon to the market, Prof. Hew founded AquaBounty Technologies as co-founder. After 20 years of efforts by AquaBounty Technologies, transgenic Atlantic salmon was finally approved by FDA in 2015. It became the first edible transgenic animal product. After the presentation, IHB researchers and students communicated with Prof. Hew on issues related to transgenic fish research.

Prof. Hew Choy Leong is a world-renowned Chinese scientist. He is currently an honorary tenured professor at the National University of Singapore and one of the pioneers in international fish genetic engineering breeding research. In recent years, He is committed to promoting international university alliances, scientific and technological cooperation and talent exchange. He has been awarded more than 10 rewards from Canada, Singapore, China and Malaysia.
