Sino-French Roundtable on Protection of Yangtze Finless Porpoises and Chinese White Dolphins Held at IHB

A Sino-French Roundtable on the Protection of Yangtze Finless Porpoises and Chinese White Dolphins (Regards croisés franco-chinois : la protection du marsouin et du dauphin blanc), one of the series of events for the 9th Sino-French Environment Month sponsored by the Consulate General of France in Wuhan, was held at the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on November 7, 2022. The meeting was attended by Mr. Maxime FERAILLE, attache of science and education, Mr. Julien SAINT-SEVIN, program officer for science and education, Ms. Shanshan LI, program officer for science and technology, and Ms. Jingjiao LIU, program officer for public relations and media from the French Consulate General in Wuhan. This gathering had close to 100 attendees, both online and offline. Nearly 100 people participated in this meeting through online and offline.   

Prof. MIAO Wei, deputy director of IHB, and Mr. Maxime FERAILLE delivered welcome speeches. Dr. Agathe SERRES, post-doc from the Institute of Deep-sea Sciences and Engineering (IDSSE) and Dr. WAN Xiaoling, post-doc from IHB, gave a presentation entitled "Challenges and opportunities for the conservation of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins in the northern South China Sea (Défis et perspectives dans la conservation du dauphin à bosse de l'Indopacifique dans le Défis et perspectives dans la conservation du dauphin à bosse de l'Indopacifique dans le nord de la mer de Chine méridionale)" and "Progress in the conservation of Yangtze finless porpoise", respectively.   

The activity consisted of a special roundtable discussion session. Mr. Maxime FERAILLE, met with Prof. HE Shunping, Associate Prof. HAO Yujiang, Dr. Agathe SERRES and Dr. WAN Xiaoling to discuss the conservation of Yangtze River, the status of Yangtze River biodiversity, France’s measures and efforts in biodiversity and environmental protection, the performance of the Chinese and French public in raising environmental awareness, and the threats facing marine mammals.    

After the roundtable, the officers from the Consulate General of France in Wuhan visited the Museum of Hydrobiological Sciences.   

The 9th Sino-French Environment Month centers on the theme "Blue Planet". A series of activities will take place throughout the country to raise public awareness of environmental protection and how to better safeguard the resources of the planet.    

The Consulate General of France in Wuhan will also work with a number of partners to organize a series of events in Central China focusing on water, urbanization and biodiversity.    

Launched in 2014, Sino-French Environment Month is the only interdisciplinary festival of environmental issues organized by foreign embassies in several Chinese cities, aiming at enhancing public awareness of environmental issues and strengthening Sino-French collaboration.
