Deputy Director General of Department of Basic Industries, NDRC Visits IHB

A three-member delegation led by FENG Zhaoxiang, deputy director general of Department of Basic Industries under National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), paid a visit to IHB on June 26, 2019.

A three-member delegation led by FENG Zhaoxiang, deputy director general of Department of Basic Industries under National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on June 26, 2019.

FENG Zhaoxiang introduced their visit purposes this time. IHB Prof. WU Chenxi gave a detailed presentation on the source, pathway entering the environment, hazard, and the research status of microplastics. He also introduced the investigation of microplastic pollution in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and its prevention and control recommendations.

Participants made supplementary explanations on the related situation, latest research progress and existing problems of microplastics pollution in inland water bodies in China.

In his closing remarks, Feng put forth three suggestions. One is that the pollution of microplastics needs to be alarmed. Two is that the most effective way to control microplastic pollution is to control the emission of plastic waste at the source. Three is that researchers should pay attention to the ecological effects of microplastics pollution and adopt the prevention and control measures.

During their visit, the delegation, accompanied by IHB’s deputy director HU Wei, had a field trip to the micro-plastic sampling site at a wharf in Wuhan.
