Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences, represented by YIN Zhan, director of the institute, signed a cooperation framework agreement with the Yunnan Management and Conservation Bureau of Upper Yangtze Rare and Endemic Fish National Nature Reserve, represented by ZHUANG Haiqing, director general of the bureau, on October 14.

According to the agreement, the two sides will conduct an all-round strategic collaboration which would help exhibit strengths of both sides and strengthen the technological ties.

The collaboration will be based on resource sharing and a win-win strategy.

“The central government has attached great importance to the ecological environment protection of Chishui River these years,” Zhuang said. “We hope to join hands with IHB at the vital moment to improve the ecological environment of Chishui River.”

The Yunnan section of the Nature Reserve is located at the headwaters of the Chishui River. Its ecological environment is directly related to the ecological environment of the Chishui River Basin. IHB Prof. CAO Wenxuan suggested that the administration departments in the Reserve pay close attention to the effects of domestic sewage, agricultural nonpoint source pollution, and riverside development and utilization.

“The construction of sewage treatment facilities shall go along with the upgrade of the agricultural industry structure, and the protection and restoration of spawning grounds of rare and endemic fishes,” Cao said.
