Founded in 1930, Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences was proud to celebrate its 90^th anniversary in this beautiful season of Wuhan.   

A symposium was held on October 26, alongside with a series of academic seminars organized by each center, lectures, and photo display featuring the development of the institute. A live musical performance held that evening added an artistic touch to the whole academic events.   

For the symposium that day, several keynote speeches were given by either the prestigious scholars in fish biology, zoology and phycology, or IHB alumni.    

Two prestigious scholars giving speeches were Prof. CHEN Yiyu and Prof. ZHAO Jindong, both are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.   

Prof. Chen reviewed the glamorous 90 years development of the institute. He encouraged the younger scientists to shoulder their responsibilities and improve their research skills.   

Phycology is one of the three basic disciplines of IHB. As a scholar of phycology, Prof. Zhao gave a presentation with the title of “Structure and function of phycobilisome”. He reviewed his first brush with the phycological study, “That was when I read a feature story in the People’s Daily written by Prof. LI Shanghao on nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria.”Prof. Li is a pioneer in establishing experimental freshwater phycology in China and worked at IHB for most of his life.    

The symposium also invited key figures from relevant departments. “As the only research institute devoted to the ecological biodiversity of inland waters, IHB is fruitful in its achievements,” said ZHAO Yimin, deputy director of the Yangtze River Fishing Supervision and Administration Office under the Ministry of Agriculture, “It has played a fundamental and supporting role in promoting national economic development, enriching food supplies, revitalizing agricultural and rural economy, alleviating poverty, and protecting diversity.”    

YUAN Zhimin, president of Wuhan Branch under Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in his speech delivered at the symposium that IHB has “a sequence of innovative achievement that has theoretic breakthrough and broad prospect in application.”   

IHB’s alumni are across the globe. As representatives of the alumni, DU Yun, GE Wei,and YANG Yong gave speeches to share their own stories with the institute.    

DU Yun is now the deputy director general of Hubei Science and Technology Department; GE Wei is Vice Rector (Research) of the University of Macau; YANG Yong is president of Guangzhou Nutriera Biotechnology Group.   

The symposium also featured a scholarship awarding session where the donor WANG Wenzhao, together with IHB’s director YIN Zhan, awarded the scholarship of 2020 to the recipient ZHANG Dong, an IHB PhD student.     

Later, Prof. CHEN Yiyu and YIN Zhan jointly launched the website of the scientific data of aquatic resources. The website will be an important part of the Hydrobiological Data Analysis Center which is affiliated to IHB.   

“We are so grateful that we received a lot of support during the preparation stage of the anniversary event,” IHB’s director said towards the end of the symposium. “Without you, the event won’t be possible and so successful.”    

Looking back, the 90 years presents IHB with both opportunities and challenges. Looking forward, a more brilliant future still starts with every single step. Let’s join hands and wade into the next decade.
