The 12th Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland was held in Wuhan during December 25 and 29, 2021. More than 400 scholars, experts and technical staff from over 50 universities, institutes and enterprises attended the symposium both online and offline.

The theme of the symposium centered on the role of constructed wetlands in water resources protection and ecological restoration under the new development concept.

The opening ceremony of the symposium was chaired by HU Wei, deputy director of the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. XIE Shouqi, deputy director of IHB, gave a welcome speech.

People addressed at the ceremony included CHEN Xilin, director general of the Bureau of International Cooperation under the Chinese Academy of Sciences; XU Weilin, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and president of Wuhan Textile University; ZHANG Yongchuan, a CAE member and Professor of University of Science and Technology; SONG Shaoxian, a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences; Wei-ta Fang, president of the Taiwan Wetland Society; Jing-yang Gu, chairman of Wetlands Taiwan; JIANG Liping, chairman of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League; XU Xudong, vice chairman of CPPCC Wuhan Municipal Committee; REN Xianyou, deputy director general of Wuhan Ecological Environment Bureau.

More than 40 presentations and nearly 50 papers were exchanged at the conference, including five keynote speeches from Prof. HOU Li-An (CAE member), Prof. WU Fengchang (CAE member), Wei-ta Fang, Yi-zhen Hsieh from Wetlands Taiwan, and Guanfeng Leung from Association for the Promotion of Landscaping and Greening in Macao.

Prof. Lei Yang, director of the Water Resource Center at Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, and Prof. WU Zhenbin from IHB, gave oral presentations on constructed wetland and its prospect.

Attendees at the symposium discussed the prospects and challenges of constructed wetlands under the new development concept of "two mountains" theory and the "double carbon" goal, and traced the origins of cooperation between both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

After the symposium, the attendees had a field trip to Zhangdu Lake Wetland Park in Wuhan.

The Cross-Strait Symposium on Constructed Wetland, initiated and organized by Prof. WU Zhenbin and Prof. Lei Yang, has been held continuously since 2008, with more than 4,200 total participants, including more than 50 senior experts, 650 papers published and 450 presentations made.

In addition to establishing a platform for theoretical discussions, technology research and development, engineering applications and other results sharing, the symposium also provided professional training, personnel exchanges, and project cooperation opportunities for experts, scholars, and management personnel about constructed wetlands on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.
