On December 11, 2024, Professor LI Weigang from Wuhan University of Science and Technology visited the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) for an academic exchange. He delivered a lecture titled "Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT," which was part of IHB's 2024 Innovation Lecture Series.

During his presentation, Prof. Li explained the concepts of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning, as well as their widespread applications across various industries. He described AI as a branch of computer science that uses hierarchical learning, closely aligned with human visual cognition. This approach enables AI to extract common patterns from large data sets, abstract them, and ultimately "self-learn."

Professor Li also discussed the various versions of ChatGPT, detailing its capabilities and the ways GPT-4’s advanced data analysis can help boost research efficiency and achieve scientific goals. He emphasized that China is increasingly prioritizing general AI, with future developments expected to focus on large models and significant transformations both domestically and globally.

Prof. Li, a senior professor and doctoral supervisor, is known for his extensive research in industrial automation and AI. He leads the Metallurgical Automation and Testing Technology Engineering Research Center and has been involved in numerous high-impact projects. His work has significantly contributed to the field of smart manufacturing in China, with successful implementations in large corporations like China Baowu Steel Group. Professor Li has received multiple accolades, including the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in Hubei Province and the Second Prize for AI Progress from the WU Wenjun AI Science and Technology Award.
