From July 22nd to 25th, 2025, 156 outstanding students from 66 universities across China gathered at the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, for the annual summer camp/summer school. Over the four-day event, participants immersed themselves in scientific research, experienced the institute's culture, and built strong connections through interaction and hands-on activities.
The program officially opened on the morning of July 23rd. Prof. XU Jun, deputy director of IHB, welcomed the students with a comprehensive introduction to the institute's history and scientific achievements, inspiring them with its rich academic heritage. This was followed by presentations from research group leaders, who introduced their respective fields and engaged in lively Q&A sessions with the attendees.
On July 24th, the students visited IHB's history museum, the Museum of Hydrobiological Sciences, and key research support facilities. At the China Zebrafish Resource Center, they learned about the scientific value of this model organism, while the advanced instruments at the testing center showcased the power of modern technology, prompting one student to exclaim, "I never knew a lab could be this impressive!"
The morning of July 25th featured an important session: interviews for recommended exempted graduate students. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions with faculty members, with many expressing strong interest in pursuing further studies at IHB.
The closing ceremony held on the evening of July 25th was both heartwarming and celebratory. It began with a specially produced video, followed by interactive games that brought everyone closer together. A surprise group birthday celebration, complete with cake, songs, and warm wishes, became an emotional highlight for many. During the ceremony, LIAO Caiping, deputy head of the Human Resources Office, announced the list of outstanding camp participants, which was met with lasting applause in recognition of both their achievements and the memorable experience they had shared.
This summer camp not only deepened the students' understanding of IHB's research strengths but also ignited their passion for science. As the event concluded, it marked not an end, but the beginning of a new journey. IHB looks forward to welcoming more talented students this autumn!
