From Sept. 14 to 17, 2026, Prof. Hong-Yuan Lee of Taiwan University visited the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for academic exchange and field research on Fu-Huan River basin governance, advancing the "Cross-Strait Joint Governance of One River" project jointly initiated by Prof. Hong-Yuan Lee, Academician WANG Yanxin of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and IHB Prof. WU Zhenbin.
On Sept. 15, Prof. Hong-Yuan Lee attended a roundtable at IHB, where IHB director MIAO Wei welcomed him and deputy director XU Jun chaired the meeting. Academicians ZHU Zuoyan and HE Shunping reviewed past cooperation between IHB and Taiwan and looked ahead to future collaboration. Participants discussed cross-strait sharing of water governance technologies and experience, and the development of basin-wide collaborative mechanisms.
Prof. Hong-Yuan Lee also gave a lecture in the IHB Innovation Lecture Series titled "Response and Adaptation to Climate Change." Drawing on Taiwan's river channel improvement and constructed wetland projects, he analyzed ecological and livelihood risks from climate warming and extreme weather, and called for multi-disciplinary, multi-sector collaboration to improve disaster prevention and basin governance resilience. He noted that a key bottleneck in water governance is translating research results into practice, and urged research institutions to serve engineering practice.
On Sept. 15 afternoon, Prof. Hong-Yuan Lee traveled to Suizhou with IHB deputy director XU Jun and Profs. WU Zhenbin and ZHOU Qiaohong for field research on the Fu-Huan River basin. They discussed top-level design, smart monitoring and digital twin applications, water pollution control, ecological restoration and multi-department coordination with Suizhou municipal leaders.
On Sept. 17, cross-strait experts attended a roundtable on "Cross-Strait Joint Governance of One River" Fu-Huan River basin governance organized by the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Hubei Provincial Party Committee. The meeting reached broad consensus on deepening cross-strait basin governance cooperation, enhancing youth exchanges, advancing the Fu-Huan River joint governance demonstration, establishing a cross-strait expert committee on basin governance, and preparing a "Research Center for Sustainable Development of Basin Governance."
