Two IHB Achievements Awarded First Prize of Hubei S&T Awards

The 2011 Hubei Science and Technology Awards Conference was held at Donghu Hotel, Wuhan on June 14.
The project “Cultivation and promotion of allogynogenetic gibel carp ‘CAS Ⅲ'", undertaken by Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB), was awarded the first prize of Hubei Science and Technology Progress Award. Another IHB’s project “Studies and application of ecological engineering of constructed wetlands aiming at different water quality requirement” was awarded the first prize of Hubei Technology Invention Award.

The project “Cultivation and promotion of allogynogenetic gibel carp ‘CAS Ⅲ'" was mainly completed by IHB Prof. GUI Jianfang and his research group. Based on the dual reproduction modes of gynogenesis and sexuality revealed in the species, Prof. Gui and his colleagues performed numerous mating experiments between two different clones, and found a few of preponderant individuals from the sexual mating progeny between clone D and clone A. Then, the preponderant individuals were propagated by six successive generations of gynogenesis with Xingguo red common carp (Cyprinus carpio) sperm stimulation, and several hundred millions of individuals were produced in hatcheries and used for aquaculture practice.

The allogynogenetic gibel carp “CAS Ⅲ" was experimentally cultured in several provinces and cities. The already popularized high dorsal gibel carps indicate that the new variety grows faster than the old variety by a range of over 20%, and the meat yield of the former is also higher by over 6.26%. The new variety has higher ability to resist diseases and shows stable genetic character. It is the first new aquatic species which is promoted by the National Technology System for Conventional Freshwater Fish Industries. During 2008 and 2010, more than 8 billion individuals of allogynogenetic gibel carp have been produced. The new variety of carps has been promoted in more than 20 provinces, and the yield rate has been increased by over 20%. More than 6 billion RMB Yuan have been gained over the past three years.

The project “Studies and application of ecological engineering of constructed wetlands aiming at different water quality requirement” was mainly completed by IHB Prof. WU Zhenbin and his research group. Based on the basic pattern of vertical flow constructed wetlands, Prof. Wu and his group developed bio-ecological hybrid technologies, such as constructed wetland and other ramificate technologies. Aiming at different objectives such as distributed point source pollution, non-point source pollution, polluted surface water, aquaculture wastewater, and tail-water treatment etc., the research team developed water purification technology. This achievement promotes the advancement of constructed wetland technologies aiming at different water quality requirement and forms effective water pollution purification system. The technology has been promoted to 16 provinces, cities and autonomous regions. 92 related projects have been planned, designed or constructed.

The 2011 Hubei Science and Technology Awards Conference was held at Donghu Hotel, Wuhan on June 14. In total, 32 achievements were awarded the fist prize of Hubei Science and Technology Progress Award and 4 achievements were awarded the first prized of Hubei Technology Invention Award.
