IHB Doctoral Students Attend the Summer Course Funded by the DAAD in Germany

IHB doctoral students Yaoyang XU and Lan WANG went to attend the summer course “management of water quality”, which is part of the summer school “Field methods and eco-hydrological models for integrated water management in rural areas” funded by the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst or German Academic Exchange Service) in the Ecology Center of Kiel University, Germany, from Sept. 15 to 30, 2009. The summer course is the second of three subsequent courses. The two IHB students interacted with other participants on hydrological mechanisms that regulate eutrophication of Three-Goreges Reservoir and models of reservoir hydro-dynamics during the course.

The summer course mainly centered on watershed modeling and water quality management, introducing water quality in Europe and explaining soil erosion, water quality and biological aspects of water quality. It also clarified the advanced statistical analysis of water quality data with Excel and R and hydrologic modeling with PcRaster and SWAT. The research on ecological modeling for water quality in Xiangxi River watershed carried out by IHB's Research Group of System Ecology and Watershed Ecology has been a case study in this course.

22 trainees from China, Russia, America, Finland, Serbia, Ethiopia, and Argentina etc. were instructed by 5 professors from Germany, China, and Brazil etc.
