Dr. Sonja Jahnig from Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries Visits IHB

Dr. Sonja Jahnig from Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries paid a visit to IHB on October 21, 2018.

Dr. Sonja Jahnig from Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries / IGB paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on October 21, 2018 for academic communication. Dr. Sonja Jahnig gave a report with the title of “Modelling riverine biodiversity and ecosystem services delivery” for researchers and postgraduates.

Dr. Sonja Jahnig first introduced the impact of global climate change on freshwater ecosystems, and based on this, emphasized the impact of climate change on river ecosystems and demonstrated the response of European river macrobenthos species distribution to various possible future climatic scenarios.

Subsequently, Dr. Sonja Jahnig shared a case of study conducted by her research team in the Danube basin, which combined the distribution information of biodiversity and ecosystem service functions within the basin to plan key conservation areas.

Finally, she highlighted the challenges and opportunities that the freshwater biodiversity conservation is facing and introduced the newly founded Alliance for freshwater life, calling for more international cooperation to protect freshwater biodiversity.

During her visit, Dr. Sonja Jahnig also reached a preliminary cooperation agreement with IHB on the conservation of freshwater biodiversity.
