Hans Paerl, Kenan Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Sciences, paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) during May 30 and June 1.

On June 1, Prof. Hans Paerl made a presentation entitled "Global Expansion of Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms: The Roles of Human and Climatic Factors”. In his presentation, he introduced the research progress on the development of cyanobacterial blooms in a worldwide context. He particularly pointed out that the nutrients in water, water temperature and global climate change could have had great influences on the development of cyanobacterial blooms and their species.

Later, Prof. Paerl visited some labs in the Research Center for Algal Biology and Applied Research at IHB.
