Dr. Chen Yushun from Arkansas University visits IHB

Dr.Chen Yushun from Arkansas University paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on June 6.

On June 6, Dr.Chen Yushun from Arkansas University was invited to the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences(IHB) to conduct academic exchanges for researchers and graduate students and gave a presentation entitled "Arkansas bait fish and the United States Leisure / Fishing fishery", "Mississippi - Yangtze River Aquatic Resources and Environment International long-term cooperation network ".

In his presentation, at first, Dr. Chen Yushun introduced the development status of U.S. recreational fishing fishery, as with the rapid development of U.S. Recreation/Fishing Fishing, the demand for bait fish increases year by year. In the United States, bait fish are mainly artificially bred, but because the quality of bait fish aquaculture water gradually deteriorated, bait fish breeding industry has entered a "bottleneck" period. By monitoring the hydrogen sulphide, pH and other physical and chemical factors of the bait fish aquaculture water, and by simulation of the mortality curve of bait fish under different pH gradient, the evaluation of the impact on ecosystems by water quality changes was performed. The research findings will provide a theoretical basis for the bait fish breeding industry in the United States.

Dr Chan introduced Mississippi - Yangtze River Aquatic Resources and Environment International long-term cooperation networks and gave the outlook on it. He pointed out that this cooperation attaches great importance by the two sides. Both sides will share the experiences and lessons of the environmental protection of the Yangtze River and the Mississippi River basin. Further cooperation in resource surveys, fisheries management, ecosystem protection, international personnel exchanges and so on will be promoted.

As an assistant professor, Dr. Chen Yushun taught at the Aquaculture and Fisheries Center of Arkansas University from January 2010. He is mainly engaged in the study of aquatic ecosystem health and land use of lower Mississippi River Basin and climate change. He also studies on the U.S. Gulf urban development and ecosystem health, sustainability and ecological health of Arkansas’ fisheries and aquaculture. Dr. Chen hoped that through this exchange, the bilateral cooperation and exchanges between the two countries can be furthered, the establishment of "Mississippi - Yangtze River Aquatic Resources and Environment International long-term cooperation network" can be accelerated.
