Wang from the Office of Public Health Studies of University of Hawaii paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on June 21, 2013. During their visit, they gave oral presentations entitled “Island and Health - Water Safety and Risk Assessment” and “A cross-sectional analysis of how attitudes and practices associated with type 2 diabetes impact glycemic control” respectively.
Beginning with the local conditions and customs of Hawaii, Prof. Lu presented a beautiful and colorful Hawaii to the audience. He gradually led the audience to think about a question “Is beach water safe?”. Prof. Lu explained the advantages and shortcomings of virus as indicator to the water quality safety. Furthermore, Prof. Lu elucidated the development of the feasible approaches to solve the shortages. These approaches include high-efficient virus concentration methods, virus detection, and screening of specific primers, etc. Prof. Lu also reported that they have investigated the water safetyof beaches in Hawaii, and proved the virus to be a sensitive indictor.
Dr. Christina M.B. Wang also shared her work with IHB researchers and students. By analyzing 1,511 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) from 4 major cities in China, Dr. Wang found many significant results to improve blood glucose control.
