Prof. R. Jan Stevenson from Michigan State University paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on October 24, 2013. During his visit, he gave a presentation entitled "An Example for Developing Nutrient Management Targets in Lakes——A Case Study on Laurentian Great Lake" for the audience.

With pictures and examples, Prof. Stevenson thoroughly illustrated his report regarding services of water resources, relationships between water resources management and pollution as well as targets for pollution management. In the report, Prof. Stevenson showed the audience the example of developing nutrient management targets in Laurentian Great Lakes. Historical remote sensing images were used to characterize weekly summer phytoplankton and nutrient loading models were established to predict weekly nutrient loads over 12 years for entire Great Lakes in this study.

Combining the findings of these two methods, Boosted Regression Tree model was then used to relate coastal chlorophyll to nutrient loading and depth of coastal zone. The results indicated that Great Lakes' phytoplankton biomass is relevant to coastal phosphorus loading. At the end of the lecture, Prof. Stevenson introduced the history of Michigan State University and showed the audience the beautiful scenery of the campus.

Prof. R. Jan Stevenson is a faculty member in the Environmental Protection Agency (USA), a Professor at the Department of Zoology, Michigan State University, the founder and co-director of Water Resources Laboratory at Michigan State University, and executive director of Kentucky Institute for Environment and Sustainable Development, University of Louisville, KY, USA.
