The 5th China-Korea Joint Seminar on Preservation & Application of Biological Resources was held on December 5, 2013, in Seoul, Korea. It was co-organized by Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB, CAS) and Korean National Research Resource Centers (KNRC). The theme of this seminar was "Preservation & Application of Hydrobiological Resources". IHB Profs. Zhu Zuoyan, Liu Yongding, Nie Pin, Song Lirong, and Sun Yonghua, together with two other professors from Institute of Oceanology, CAS and Central China Normal University were invited to attend the seminar.

14 oral presentations were made at the seminar. The five IHB professors respectively gave oral presentations entitled "Current research status in developing growth hormone-transgenic common carp for aquaculture", "Cyanobacteria in deserts: From theory to application", "Phylogenetic relationship between acanthocephalans and rotifers", "FACHB collection – The Freshwater Algae Culture Collection at the Institute of Hydrobiology: The algal resources for fundamental and applied research", "Primordial germ cells (PGCs) manipulation in zebrafish".

This seminar has provided a platform for the attendees to show their research progress in the field of preservation and application of biological resources. It also strengthened the China-Korea bilateral exchanges and cooperation in the related field, including fish, algae, parasites, microorganisms and so on. On the other hand, the seminar gave the attendees an opportunity to better learn the significant progress and international influence of preservation and application of biological resources in Korea.

The China-Korea Joint Seminar on Preservation & Application of Biological Resources was co-founded by Prof. Song Lirong, director of Freshwater Algae Culture Collection of IHB, and Prof. Yeon-hee Lee, director of the KNRC, in 2009. It is held once every year in China or Korea, and it aims to strengthen ties between China and Korea in preservation and research of biological resources. The seminar was co-funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRFK). Both sides unanimously agreed that the next China-Korea Joint Seminar will be held in 2014 in IHB.
