Dr. LU Guoqing from University of Nebraska Visits IHB

Invited by the Research Group of Algal Ecology and the Research Group of Fish Cytogenetics and Population Genetics at Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB), Dr. LU Guoqing, Associate Professor of University of Nebraska in the United States, paid a visit to IHB during Jan. 2 and 5.

On the afternoon of January 2, Dr.Lu gave an oral presentation entitled “Hybridization of Bighead Carp and Silver Carp: Genomic and Transcription Perspectives”. In his presentation, Dr.Lu introduced the change of population dynamics and genetic diversity when silver carp and bighead carp were first introduced in Mississippi in the 70s of last century. The silver carp and bighead carp, as biological invasive species, had serious impact on river ecosystem.

Dr. Lu and his research team launched their research in population genetics, genomics and transcriptomics by using the sample from the Yangtze River, the Zhujiang River, the Heilongjiang River and the Mississippi, thus made a thorough explanation of the hybrid phenomenon in the Mississippi.

During his visit, Dr. Lu interacted with several IHB Professors. They planed to carry out cooperative research in plankton diversity and its impact in population dynamics and germplasm resources of silver carp and bighead carp. They both agreed to carry out related research work in the Yangtze River and the Mississippi River this year.
