Editor-in-Chief of Hydrobiologia Visits IHB

Prof. Koen Martens

Prof. Koen Martens, editor-in-chief of the international journal Hydrobiologia and Professor of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, together with Prof. Jiang-Shiou Hwang from Taiwan Ocean University (advisory editorial board of Hydrobiologia), paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) during Feb. 21 and 24, 2014.

At the lecture held on Feb. 21, Prof. Martens gave an oral presentation entitled "Global Freshwater Biodiversity" and Prof. Hwang gave an oral presentation entitled "Meiofauna in particular aquatic habitats hydrothermal vents, deep sea, caves, coral reefs, and polar waters". Prof. Martens discussed the contribution that freshwater biodiversity made to the global biodiversity from the aspects of ecosystem, species biodiversity and genetic diversity.

At the lecture held on Feb. 22, Prof. Martens gave an oral presentation entitled "Scientific publishing: a case study of Hydrobiologia". Based on his personal experience working at Hydrobiologia, Prof. Martens shared with the audience the S&T paper writing skills and other issues related to the paper publishing, peer review and paper quality etc. Moreover, he also had an in-depth interaction with the staff working at ACTA Hydrobiologica Sinica on issues such as how to elevate the quality of ACTA Hydrobiologica Sinica and he also put forth some concrete concepts on how the ACTA Hydrobiologica Sinica can strive towards the goal of becoming an SCI journal.

Prof. Martens is a professor at the University of Ghent and senior researcher at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. His main research interests are phylogeny, taxonomy and evolution of non-marine Ostracoda. He presently coordinates about 20 research projects, either related to the above research topics, or to science policy on the conservation of biodiversity in general. Koen is Editor in Chief of Hydrobiologia, for which he assesses close to 1,500 manuscripts each year, and is member of the editorial board of several other international journals. He is a member of the freshwater sciences committee of DIVERSITAS. He also wrote and edited more than 10 books and (co-) authored about 550 articles, both scientific and popular. Koen received several awards, amongst which Lucien De Coninck Award (Belgium, 2001) and Scritture D'Acqua (Italy, 2004).

Prof. Hwang obtained his Ph.D. at Boston University. His specialty is zooplankton, coral reef, behavior and ecology, feeding ecology, laser vides optical application. He is also the Vice-President of the World Association of Copepodologists from 2011 to 2014.
