Doctors from Friedrich-Alexander-University, Erlangen Visit IHB
Dr. Peter Richter gave an oral presentation with the title of “Algae in space –Towards a bioregenerative life support system for space research” at IHB.
Dr. Peter Richter and Dr. Maria Ntefidou from the Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU), Erlangen in Germany paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) from March 11 to 14, 2014.
During their visit, both doctors gave oral presentations with the title of “Algae in space –Towards a bioregenerative life support system for space research” and “Methods to study sensory perception in Euglena gracilis”, respectively. They later visited the Museum for Aquatic Organisms, the Freshwater Algae Culture Collection and China Zebrafish Resource Center. They had an extensive discussion with IHB researchers, technicians and students on the cooperative issues regarding the programs of Chinese and international space stations.
Dr. Peter Richter has conducted research on the gravitaxis of algae cells and space closed aquatic ecosystem at FAU since 2000. He participated in the Sino-German Cooperation in Space Biology Research (Simbox on SZ-8 mission) in 2011 and collaborated with IHB researchers to carry out experiments about Closed Aquatic Ecosystem and Gene Expression of Algae Cells under Space Microgravity. These experiments have achieved success and parts of their results have been published in the journal Plant Biology. Dr Maria Ntefidou has done researches on phototaxis and gravitaxis of algae cells since her graduation.
