In his presentation, Dr. Nachtigall systematically introduced the research by his team carried out in the marine mammals over the past 40 years. Dr. Nachtigall was the director of the Marine Mammal Research Program (MMRP) which was founded in 1993. In the same year, he joined with Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology to continue studies of the acoustic sensory systems in whales and dolphins.    

Dr. Nachtigalls research interests focus on the sensory and perceptual processes of dolphins and small whales. Past research has focused on taste reception, vision, hearing and echolocation of odontocete cetaceans. Current investigations are on the following species: bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus), false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens), and Melon-headed whales (Peponocepala electra).
