Dr. Ge Liu from USDA Visits IHB
Dr. Ge Liu paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences on August 1st, 2014.
On Aug 1st, 2014, Dr. Ge Liu, visited the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) and gave a presentation with the title of “Structural and functional impacts of copy number variations on the cattle genome”. He is currently a research biologist at the Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory of the United States Department of Agriculture, and a guest professor in the University of Maryland.
In his presentation, Dr. Liu pointed out that through bioinformatics, copy number variations (CNVs) in cattle genome are associated with different traits such as domestication, health, growth and milk production. His talk focused on analyzing cattle CNVs based on existing next generation sequencing (NGS), array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) and SNP genotyping data. His project provided the second generation cattle CNV map, which significantly improved the cattle reference genome and its annotation by filling in novel sequence information. During the seminar, Dr. Liu also had extensive discussions with the attendees.
