Professors from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Visit IHB

Prof. Sukenik Assaf gave an oral presentation during his visit to IHB.

During Sept. 1st to Sept. 9th, Prof. Sukenik Assaf and Prof. Ostrovsky Ilia of Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research (IOLR) paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) and the Field Station of Lake Dianchi located in Kunming, Yunnan province.

Prof. Sukenik Assaf and Prof. Ostrovsky Ilia had conducted a series of academic activities at IHB during Sept. 1st to Sept. 5th. They first introduced the overview of IOLR and the long-term liminological research progress of Lake Kinneret. Then, Prof. Sukenik and Prof. Ostrovsky gave oral presentations with the titles of ”Hydroacoustics - as a tool to study spatiotemporal processes in freshwater ecosystems” and “Biological factors that affect the dynamics of phytoplankton population”, respectively.

Later, they visited the institute’s R&D Division of Public Technology and Service (including Freshwater Algae Culture Collection, National Zebrafish Resource Center and Analysis and Testing Center), Center for Algal Biology and Applied Research, Center for Microalgal Biotechnology and Biofuels. The two visiting professors discussed on the work plan of a joint cooperative project with the faculty and students of the Research Group of Algae Resource and Toxicology Laboratory and conducted a first field survey on cyanobacteria bloom in Lake Donghu.

During Sept. 5th to Sept. 8th, the two visiting professors went to Kunming and visited the field station and the demonstration area of the National Water Pollution Control and Treatment Science and Technology Major Project in Lake Dianchi, and communicated with researchers and students in the field station about the research progress of cyanobacteria bloom both in Lake Kinneret and Lake Dianchi. They carried out the field test of Microcystis bloom in Lake Dianchi and discussed on the further experimental scheme and collaborative research together.

In August, a cooperation research project entitled “Formation of cyanobacteria Microcystis blooms in shallow and deep lakes: implementation of novel methodologies to study spatiotemporal organization oftoxic populations” was approved by National Natural Science Foundation and Israel Science Foundation. Prof. Song Lirong and Prof. Ostrovsky Ilia acted as the Primary Investigators of the cooperation project.
