At the invitation of Prof. Assaf Sukenik of Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR), Prof. SONG Lirong, Dr. LI Lin and Dr. WU Xingqiang from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) paid a visit to Israel to carry out the cooperative research on cyanobacterial blooms from March 6 to 17, 2016.

During their stay in Israel, the IHB delegation led by Prof. Song attended the Mini-Symposium on Cyanobacteria Diversity-from Aquatic Ecosystems to Soil Crust, and gave oral presentations with the titles of “Ecophysiological and ecosystem study on cyanobacterial blooms in Dianchi Lake”, “Variation of Phytoplankton Population and Its Modelling by Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithms in Lake Dianchi, China” and “Environmental fate of Microcystis and their toxins in sediment-water interface: Lake Dianchi as an example”, respectively. At the symposium, attendees from both sides reported the technical progress on the control of cyanobacterial blooms and desertification treatment by using algae and discussed the scientific problems on the cyanobacterial blooms and desert algae research.

Kinneret Limnological Laboratory (KLL), which is affiliated to IOLR, has conducted 50 years liminological research on Lake Kinneret which is the largest lake in Israel. During their visit, Scientists from IHB and KLL worked together and conducted in-situ cruise investigation of the distribution of cyanobacteria in Lake Kinneret by using laser in-situ scattering and transmissometry (LISST-100X).

The IHB delegation later visited the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and communicated the research progress on the cyanobacteria ecophysiology with Prof. Aaron Kaplan’s group. They also visited the Institute for Desert Research, Ben-Gurion University, and discussed the new application of microalgae with Prof. Sammy Bossiba, the director of Microalgae Biotechnology Research Center where several algae experts of IHB had worked in the 1990s.

This visit to Israel was to perform the NSFC-ISF cooperative project –“Formation of cyanobacteria Microcystis blooms in shallow and deep lakes: implementation of novel methodologies to study spatiotemporal organization of toxic populations”. This three-year project began in October 2015.
