Prof. Menfred Schartl from University of Wuerzburg paid a visit to IHB on October 23.
Prof. Menfred Schartl from University of Wuerzburg paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on October 23. During his visit, he presented a report on the "Genomic approaches to understand evolution of sex chromosomes in fish" to IHB scientists and students.
In the report, Prof. Schartl introduced the latest progress in the study of fish sex-determining gene and sex chromosomes from three aspects: the origin and evolution of sex-determining gene, the hereditary conservation and variability of sex-determining gene, the stability and evolution of the sex chromosomes. Prof. Schartl then introduced the new discoveries in his study such as novel sex-determining gene, new properties of sex chromosomes in the wild zebra fish, and new proofs about the variability of sex chromosomes. After the presentation, scientists and students communicated with Prof. Schartl regarding to the giant Y chromosome in some fishes.
Prof. Schartl is vice-chairman of the DFG Research Center for Experimental Biomedicine (Rudolf-Virchow-Zentrum). Since 2001 he has been Adjunct Professor for Experimental Cancer Research at the Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Bergen/Norway. He is in the Editorial Board of several international journals and acts as reviewer for several national and international funding organizations and scientific journals.
