Dr. Quan Dong, chief and supervisory ecologist from United States Geological Survey (USGS) Fort Collins Science Center paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) on December 8, 2015. During his visit, Dr. Dong gave a lecture entitled “Ecological Flows in Human-Natural Hydroscapes”.
In the lecture, he first introduced the history and definition of environmental flows and ecological flows and discussed the difference between the two concepts. Then he talked about research in human-natural systems, hydroscapes, riparian ecology, and aquatic ecology and contaminants of rivers of western United States from the branch he is leading. In the end, he presented the results of his past research projects such as comprehensive ecological restoration of the Colorado River and Everglades. Research scientists and graduate students from related fields at IHB attended the lecture and further discussed the management of river basin ecosystems and current issues related to ecological flows.
Dr. Dong’s research interests include: detecting key processes that underlie spatial and temporal dynamics of ecological systems, identifying organizing principles that link individuals, populations, communities, food webs, ecosystems, and landscapes, and applying innovative, integrative, and quantitative approaches to solve problems in conservation, restoration and management of natural resources. Dr. Dong has served one term as the President of Sino-Ecologists Association Overseas and made a great contribution to ecological and environmental communications between China and the United States.
