Prof. Akihiko Terada from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Visits IHB

Prof. Akihiko Terada from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology visited IHB on October 19, 2018.

Prof. Akihiko Terada from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology paid a visit to Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on October 19, 2018 for academic communication.

Professor Terada gave a presentation with the title of "Enrichment, physiology and application of nitrous oxide-reducing bacteria towards the mitigation in engineered systems for nitrogen removal".

In his presentation, Prof. Terada introduced their intensive studies on exploration, understanding and application of N2O-reducing bacteria to mitigate the emission of N2O in conventional wastewater treatment plant.

They have herewith identified, enriched, and isolated highly active N2O-reducing bacteria. More importantly, the isolates, Azospira sp. strains I09 and I13, have unique physiological traits with high oxygen tolerance and fast recovery of N2O reduction after oxygen exposure.

The immobilization of Azospira sp. strain I13 consolidates these traits, which can be applied to a nitrogen-removing wastewater treatment process for mitigation of N2O emission.

Prof. Terada obtained his Ph.D from Waseda University and did postdoctoral study at Technical University of Denmark. Now, He is working at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. His main research interests are environmental engineering microbiology, microbial ecology, and membrane bioreactor, etc. He is also a member of IWA, ISME, JSME, JSWE and SCEJ, hence he has many experience on international academic communication and cooperation.
