Prof. Yoshiro Watanabe from Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo and Associate Prof. SUN Peng from Ocean University of China visited Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences on December 24, 2018 for academic exchange.

During their visit, Prof. Watanabe gave a presentation with the title of "Fisheries Oceanography-Marine environment and ecology of pelagic fishes". Starting with the differences between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, he described the effects of ocean currents on marine ecosystems and fish population replenishment.

Associate Prof. Sun, on the topic of “Effects of climate change on the early growth and replenishment of Trichiurus lepturus in the East China Sea”, described the use of otolith microstructure to reshape the early growth process of T. lepturus and explored the response of different supplementary populations to the climate change.

Prof. Watanabe has long been engaged in the study of early life history of fishes and recruitment determination in Clupeoid fishes and published over 200 papers and 20 monographs. He used to be the chief of The Japanese Society of Fisheries Oceanography. Associate Prof. Sun mainly focuses on fishing-induced fish evolution and influences of climate change and the pressure under exploitation on the fish life-history traits and fishery ecosystem.
