WANG Cheng, a PhD student of Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was walking along the East Lake in the early morning on October 20 when he saw a young woman jumped into the lake to commit suicide.
He dived into the lake immediately and tried his best to swim her to safety. Reaching the shore, Wang called 110, the emergency number for police in China.
Police arrived in time on the scene and helped calm the woman down with Wang. The woman’s condition was not considered life-threatening after physical examination. Eventually, they walked her to her friend’s home.
“It was no big deal,” Wang said, “I happened to be there and it was spontaneous.”
“We are very proud of WANG Cheng for rescuing the woman,” said FENG Xi, head of the Graduate Education Office.
